We all wear masks, and the time comes when we cannot remove them without removing some of our own skin. – Andre Berthiaume

We all wear masks, although the extent to which we layer ourselves or are aware of them varies greatly.

They are the edited and decorated versions we prefer to show to the world. What they shield are those parts of us that for whatever reasons, we don’t like or accept; or that others need us to hide to make them feel more comfortable.

However for the most part, we don’t even realize the masks are there.

We are all so flawed and vulnerable, albeit to varying degrees.  Some of us are just better at hiding our masks – even from ourselves.

And while we might buy into that false image the price we pay for being masked can be pretty steep.

But what if we decided to face our fear and rid ourselves of these masks…and decide to be authentic

Sometimes we need those masks. When we have a child and her mother is ill we need the mask of confidence.
When we lose someone special we need a mask to stop us from crumbling in front of everyone. When we face strangers we sometimes need the mask of confidence we don’t really feel.
Sometimes without the masks we couldn’t function at all. To be honest, without a mask I’d never leave the house.

As David said, masks aren’t always a bad thing, I believe. Sometimes they’re necessary to give us the courage to show ourselves – however edited – to the real world. Lovely post. 🙂
